Creek Indian Odyssey

an original ballet by Adria Ferrali, based on the tales of the American Indian Princess, Sehoy of the Wind Tribe

Alabama River Region Ballet is proud to present “Creek Indian Odyssey”, an original ballet by internationally renowned choreographer and DAP Festival Artistic Director, Adria Ferrali of Pietransanta, Italy.  Performances will be at the historic Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts at Troy University Montgomery on Friday, March 8th at 7:00pm, Saturday, March 9th at 7:00pm, and Sunday, March 10th at 2:00pm.

The inspiration for “Creek Indian Odyssey” began during one of Ms. Ferrali’s  visits to Montgomery, AL and following a conversation with ARRB’s Executive Artistic Director, Priscilla Crommelin Ball. Ms. Ball recounted stories of the local American Indian tribes and tales, including the history of an American Indian Princess called “Sehoy of the ‘Wind Tribe’”. After touring and hiking around Fort Toulouse in Elmore County, Ms. Ferrali was further inspired by the land and rivers flowing in and around the quaint town of Wetumpka (the Indian name meaning “rumbling waters”). She was truly fascinated by the abundance of historical sites in the area, as well as the original culture of the Creek Indian Tribe. Upon further research, Adria read some of the sacred Indian texts and realized what an influence Christianity had on this tribe. It was at this moment, that the seeds were planted for a new ballet to be produced. Adria quickly began researching new movement and choreographing her American Indian inspired masterpiece. Later the same year, she was honored to perform “Creek Indian Odyssey” in her hometown of Pietrasanta, Italy in the St. Augustine Cathedral, with ARRB Associate Artistic Director, Curran Tellalian. The two of them danced amongst the gorgeous Dolmens of the renowned Albanian sculptor, Helidon Xhixha. With the breathtaking cathedral as the background, the set of the ballet included the magnificent ancient altar of St. Augustine Cathedral. It was at this magical moment, that Adria realized she must see this project to its completion and create a full-length ballet. This American Indian masterpiece will be premiered in Montgomery and the adventure begins March 8 – 10!!

In the Montgomery production, “Creek Indian Odyssey” will be performed by the dancers of the Alabama River Region Youth Ballet Company. These dancers, all of whom have trained at Alabama River Region Ballet School under the direction of Priscilla Crommelin Ball and School Director Kyana Goodyear, are some of the most talented dancers from Montgomery and surrounding areas.  The Youth Company will perform with Curran Tellalian and professional danseur Thomas Johanssen of Oslo, Norway.
